Advanced OB and Women’s Health are vital components of Family Medicine, and a strong point of our Residency program. The Advanced OB Fellowship was instituted at Truman Medical Center Lakewood to provide interested residents with surgical OB and Women's Health training. This is a 1 year fellowship with the option of a second year!

The program is led by Stephen Vierthaler, MD, Board Certified in Family Medicine (Univ of Iowa Residency) and OB/Gyn (Univ of Kansas Residency), Graduate of the Univ of Kansas School of Medicine.

The OB Fellow is a junior Faculty department member.

New TMC Lakewood Birthplace Center is Now Open!

Expectant mothers planning to deliver their babies at TMC Lakewood will enjoy the amenities of a brand new unit beginning Monday in the Lakewood Family Birthplace. The Labor/Delivery/Recovery/Postpartum (LDRP) unit provides comprehensive care for moms and newborns with an OB emergency room, antepartum testing, labor and delivery, postpartum care, newborn and specialcare nursery, and operating room and Post-Anesthesia Care Unit. Located on the first floor above the main entrance to the hospital, the LDRP is easily accessible to patients and visiting family members. The new unit provides patients with an inviting, comfortable and technically advanced setting for delivery services. Space has been designed to allow for projected growth.

19 private LDRP suites

• Families can remain in the same room throughout their stay.

• New moms may opt to use the traditional Hill-Rom delivery bed during the course of their stay or queen-sized Murphy beds for more homelike comfort.

• Flat-screened TVs and Wi-Fi will be available in all rooms.

• Access to a jetted tub is available to all patients for early labor or after-delivery comfort.

OB operating rooms

• Two spacious operating suites with adequate space for twin deliveries are located within the unit.

• Babies can stay in the C-Section room with mom until she moves to the recovery room, as long as both are stable. This improves the bonding, and provides an opportunity for skin-to-skin contact and breastfeeding.

• Services will expand to be able to perform tubal ligation after delivery, in the same unit rather than transferring the patient to the main ORs.

Well baby nursery/special care nursery

• Improved, larger area to accommodate more patients-and a much better environment to support infection control.

• High-visibility window design with mini-blinds between the glass to allow closing during procedures (IV starts, lab draws).

• Family-friendly for the siblings with steps in front to allow all sizes of family members to see into the nursery.

• An enlarged work space inside the nursery to allow for better workflow.

• Special care nursery provides the ability to separate the not-sowell, special care baby from the well baby side.

• Procedure areas allow 2 providers to perform procedures (circumcisions) at the same time, helping us with discharge planning.

• Level II NICU is staffed in collaboration with Children's Mercy Hospital.
