The Sports Medicine Fellowship is a one-year ACGME accredited program designed to train individuals in the management of problems experienced by athletes and those who exercise.
The curriculum includes devoted time in the Sports Medicine Center, the Family Health Center and management of Division I NCAA athletes in the training room as well as on the sidelines. The fellows also work directly with athletic trainers and coaches in providing on-going care of high school athletes and on-site presence for practice and competitive sporting events.
The fellows undergo a longitudinal experience in the offices of private orthopedic surgeons, rotations with physical therapy and podiatry as well as an initial experience in cadaver dissection at the Medical School anatomy laboratory.
Weekly educational didactic seminars focus on research concepts, sports medicine conditions and specific problems not commonly encountered in a one-year fellowship program. A monthly journal club reviews recent articles that emphasize research methodology and timely clinical relevance. A regular radiology conference highlights educational musculoskeletal cases. Additional experiences can be arranged with approval.
All fellows are expected to present sports medicine lectures for resident education and attend a national sports medicine meeting. Each fellow is encouraged to present posters, publish academic manuscripts and participate in original clinical research.
Selection Two Sports Medicine fellows per year are accepted. You should apply to the Sports Medicine fellowship through ERAS #1272813107. Sports Medicine at TMC Lakewood
The UMKC Sports Medicine Fellowship is the only ACGME certified primary care sports medicine program in Missouri and operates from the Sports Medicine Center at TMC Lakewood.
The Sports Medicine Center provides comprehensive musculoskeletal care and addresses medical concerns related to exercise. The physicians evaluate acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions, provide non-surgical fracture management and perform joint injections.
For sports related concussions we offer computer based ImPACT analysis. Musculoskeletal ultrasound is used diagnostically and for injections. Exercise stress testing is performed for cardiopulmonary evaluation, exercise-induced asthma and determining appropriate exercise perscriptions.
The Sports Medicine Center coordinates appropriate rehabilitation programs with the Physical Therapy Department and collaborates with other musculoskeletal health care providers as needed.
